Anthroposophy and Social Engagement: A book reading and conversation with Christopher and Signe Schaefer

For over 50 years Chris and Signe Schaefer have been discussing and working for social change. Their ongoing conversation—on whether change happens through systemic and structural transformation, through individual development, or is reliant on both—is reflected in their books.

How have your social interests and spiritual commitments influenced each other? To what degree do you experience Anthroposophy as a path of peace, justice and social reform in your life?  Rudolf Steiner suggested that Anthroposophy kindles the love of humanity “and grows creative in moral impulses to action, and in the practice of a truly social life.”   In this talk and conversation Signe and I will read briefly from the recently published book Moved by Destiny: Life Stories of Social Engagement which contains 22 essays by individuals who have connected their lives to both Anthroposophy and to social reform efforts. We will then explore these questions in your life  in the whole group. It is my hope that we can give each other courage in this difficult and chaotic time by sharing our efforts at contributing to a better world. ~ CS
